Hutchinson, KS – The Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) Titans' season ended Monday night after falling 84-78 to the Connors State Cowboys (OK) in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association's (NJCAA) Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. With the loss, the Titans closed their season with a 25-9 record.
In a first half that saw nine lead changes, the Titans were able to take control of the game behind the up-tempo play of sophomore guard Mike Laster and strong post presence from freshman forward Anyeuri Castillo. Both Laster and Castillo scored 10 points in the first half to help the Titans to a 40-35 lead at the midway point.
Coming out of the halftime break, the momentum swayed in Connors State's favor behind the hot hands of their shooters. The Cowboys went 6-of-6 from behind the three-point line, after shooting only 16.7 percent in the first half.
Down by eight late in the second half, the Titans rallied back following consecutive baskets by Mike Laster and a big three-pointer from freshman DeJon Waters, Jr. As the Titans were forced to foul in the final seconds of the game, Connors State was able to secure the victory at the free throw line down the stretch.
Mike Laster led the Titans with 17 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds, and three steals. Anyeuri Castillo finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, and one assist. Cheick Kone tallied 11 points, two rebounds, and three assists.
