Macon, Ga. – Following the departure of sophomores Mike Laster (Bowling Green State University) and Cheick Kone (Young Harris College), the Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) men's basketball program has already started the trek to repeat as Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) champions with the recent signing of Andrew College transfer, Ijon Owens.
Owens, a 6'1" guard from Cordele, is a 2017 graduate of Crisp County High School. In his senior year, Ijon averaged 16.5 points, 2.8 assists, 3.3 reb, and 1.4 steals for the Crisp County Cougars.
Following an impressive 2017-18 season, in which he averaged 18.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists in 28 games for the Andrew College Tigers, Owens was named the GCAA Freshman of the Year, and was also selected to the GCAA All-Freshman Team and All-Region Second Team.
"Ijon will be a great addition to our program," said CGTC's head men's basketball coach, Reco Dawson. "He earned Freshman of the Year in our conference and we expect big things from him. We are very excited to have him."
The CGTC Titans finished the 2017-18 season with a 25-9 overall record, and 11-5 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA). Winning their first conference title in program history in March 2018, the Titans earned an automatic bid to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.
